Barley Mule Cottage Pie
A hearty, comforting cottage pie with savory beef, vegetables, and a creamy mashed potato topping.
Baking dish: 9 × 9 inches
Oven temperature: 400°F
Bake time: 40 minutes
Ingredients
Beef Filling
-
2 pounds ground beef
-
1 small onion, finely diced
-
1 small bag frozen peas and carrots
-
1 packet brown gravy mix
-
½ cup water
-
½ teaspoon salt
-
½ teaspoon black pepper
-
1 teaspoon minced garlic
Mashed Potato Topping
-
4 large potatoes, peeled and diced
-
½ stick butter (4 tablespoons)
-
½ cup milk
-
Salt and black pepper, to taste
Instructions
-
Prepare the potatoes. Place the peeled, diced potatoes in a pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and cook until fork-tender. Drain thoroughly, then mash with the butter and milk until creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.
-
Brown the beef. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef until browned and fully cooked, breaking it into crumbles. Drain off all grease thoroughly.
-
Mix the filling. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked beef, diced onion, frozen peas and carrots, brown gravy mix, water, salt, pepper, and minced garlic. Mix well.
-
Build the cottage pie. Spread the beef mixture evenly in a 9 × 9-inch baking dish. Place the mashed potatoes in a piping bag and pipe over the filling or gently spread them over the mixture.
-
Bake. Bake in a preheated 400°F oven for 40 minutes, until the filling is bubbling and the potato topping is lightly golden.
-
Serve. Let stand for 5–10 minutes before serving.
